Hamas is seeking clear guarantees that a new US proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza will lead to an end to the war, a source close to the militant group said on Thursday. Meanwhile, Israeli officials are optimistic, saying the chances of a ceasefire deal and hostage release are high, nearly 21 months after the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
According to US President Donald Trump, Israel has agreed to terms for a 60-day ceasefire with Hamas, during which the parties will work to end the war. However, Hamas insists on guarantees that the ceasefire will result in a final end to the conflict, a point that has caused a stalemate in previous negotiations. Another source familiar with the matter said Israel expects Hamas' response by Friday.
If the response is positive, an Israeli delegation will join indirect talks, mediated by Egypt or Qatar. The proposal includes the release of 10 live Israeli hostages and the return of the bodies of 18 others, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Of the 50 hostages remaining in Gaza, 20 are believed to be still alive.
Negotiations continue as the parties try to overcome differences to reach a solution that could end the long-running conflict.
