Are Kamala Harris' bubbles bursting?

Vice President Kamala Harris' political "honeymoon" may be coming to an end, according to a prominent political scientist who warned that the Democratic presidential nominee is likely to face increased scrutiny of her policy proposals that are "probably further to the left than the average American voter."

The claim was made to Newsweek by Thomas Gift, who directs the Center for US Politics at University College London, although another expert on US politics said Harris' speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) was likely to "extend her honeymoon next week".

Harris was quickly established as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee after President Joe Biden announced he would withdraw from the race on July 21 and endorsed the vice president as his successor.

In recent days, Harris has suffered a series of blows, and on Thursday, betting companies Paddypower, Betfair, William Hill and 888.sport were again offering more favorable odds for Trump to win the presidency than her.

Also released this week was a Navigator Research poll of five battleground states that found Harris either tied with Trump or behind him in all of them.

For the poll, 600 likely voters were questioned in each of Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and North Carolina. It found that Trump was ahead of Harris in Arizona and Pennsylvania by 1 and 2 percentage points, respectively, while they were tied in Michigan, North Carolina and Wisconsin. In 2020, Biden won Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, although he narrowly lost North Carolina.

On Friday, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , who ran as a Democrat earlier in the cycle, suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump.

An analysis of recent polls by election website RacetotheWH found that Kennedy's exit from the race could be enough to give Trump victory in North Carolina and Nevada because of their overlapping bases of support.

As of Friday, polling website FiveThirtyEight had Harris 3.5 points ahead of Trump at 47.2 percent to 43.7 percent, with Kennedy in third at 4.4 percent.
