German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was positively surprised by his phone call with Donald Trump after the Republican's re-election as US president on November 5, 2024.
"It was, perhaps surprisingly, a very detailed and good conversation with the US president-elect," Scholz said in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, published on Friday (15 November 2024).
Scholz said that during the phone call with Trump, they talked "at length about Ukraine."
While stressing that it would be "inappropriate" to reveal the details of their conversation, Scholz added that he had the impression that Trump has a different position than is perceived in Europe, regarding the situation around the world.
Also, last Friday, Scholz held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin for about an hour, marking the first direct communication between the two leaders in nearly two years, according to German media reports.
Asked in the Süddeutsche Zeitung interview whether he fears a damaging deal on Ukraine between Trump and Putin, Scholz replied that "there was no indication of that in the conversation" with the newly elected Republican president.
Scholz also emphasized that Putin has not achieved his declared goals in the invasion of Ukraine since Russia has not managed to occupy the entire country, while NATO has gained two members, Finland and Sweden, and that now the alliance "is stronger than never".
