Accused of misuse of EU funds, Marine Le Pen appears before the court

The Paris prosecutor's office announced that far-right leader Marine Le Pen and 23 other members of her party will stand trial for alleged misuse of EU funds, following a seven-year investigation. 

The Paris prosecutor's office opened the investigation in December 2016, saying it aimed to establish whether the then-National Front had used money intended for EU parliamentary assistants to pay staff working for the party, foreign media reported . 

EU lawmakers are allocated funds to cover expenses, including their assistants, but must not use them for party expenses.

The prosecutor's office said the situation of around 49 aides was examined over a period spanning three terms of the EU parliament, from 2004 to 2016.
