Fresh from a high-profile visit to Russia and a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called for strengthening "close contacts" with Moscow.
Kim's "official goodwill" visit to Russia was discussed at a meeting of the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea, the Pyongyang-based KCNA news agency reported.
" The recent visit put the relations of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea with Russia at a new strategic level in response to the demand of the new era and brought about a radical change in the world geopolitical situation," said a report from the meeting, held on on Wednesday.
Kim began his visit to Russia on September 12 and ended on September 17. Kim's visit presented long-term plans for developing relations with Russia, the report said.
It "achieved the desired results", it is further emphasized.
Kim has emphasized "the need to strengthen close contacts and cooperation between the two countries' respective fields, to expand and develop cooperation in every field in an all-round way."
The Kim-Putin meeting and talks of military cooperation raised fears in Western circles that North Korea could help Russia prolong its war on Ukraine, while Russia could help North Korea's illegal weapons program.
