The analyzes on the viral load and the spread of Covid-19 that the Institute of Epidemiology is conducting in the waste water of Athens, have highlighted the high number of cocaine users in the country's capital.
According to Professor Dr. Nikos Thomaidhis, head of the analysis sector at the Greek Institute of Epidemiology, more than 120,000 residents of the country's capital, Athens, are regular users of cocaine, an alarming number, but which according to him is below the European average.
Thomaidhis emphasized that the number of users of this drug could be even greater since a good part of the capital's residential areas are not connected to the central sewerage network.
The number of drug users in the country has increased significantly due to the decrease in the price of cocaine in the market and the ease with which it enters the country. He asked for urgent measures as the trend of cocaine use is increasing.
According to him, the figures have become worrying since the beginning of the Covid pandemic in 2020, when there was a drastic increase in cocaine users in the country, tripling compared to before the pandemic.
