French President Emmanuel Macron urged the Israeli government to "avoid any behavior" that could lead to "escalation", "especially in Lebanon", following an attack attributed to Israel in Beirut that killed Hamas's second-in-command. he said yesterday evening from the Elysee Palace.
Macron spoke by phone to Israeli Minister Benny Gantz, a member of Benjamin Netanyahu's wartime government, where he stressed that it was "necessary to avoid any behavior that could lead to escalation, especially in Lebanon."
Hamas's number two, Saleh al-Aruri, was killed in an attack attributed to Israel in a suburb of Beirut.
It was the first time since the outbreak of the October 7 war in the Gaza Strip that a sector of the Lebanese capital was targeted.
"This crime will not go unanswered or unpunished," said the Lebanese faction of Hezbollah, a Hamas ally. The Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, for his part, accused Israel of trying to drag Lebanon into the "new phase of the conflict".
