White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt appeared before reporters today to comment on the "dramatic change" in the Trump administration's policy toward Russia, culminating in the imposition of new sanctions yesterday against two Russian oil giants, Rosneft and Lukoil.
The move, seen as a sharp turn from Trump's previous softer policy, comes amid efforts to push Moscow toward a ceasefire in Ukraine.
At a press conference held at the White House, Leavitt faced questions about the reasons for this rapid change, but she said the president has always been open to tough measures when the situation calls for it.
"The president has always stated that he will implement sanctions on Russia when he feels it is appropriate and necessary, and yesterday was that day," she declared, referring to the Treasury Department's decision to hit the Russian economy in the energy sector.
Leavitt did not spare criticism of the Kremlin, reiterating Trump's frustration with Vladimir Putin.
" I think the president has long expressed his frustration with Vladimir Putin and, frankly, with both sides of this war ," she said, noting that the administration has not seen enough interest from the Russian side to "move the ball forward toward peace."
However, the spokeswoman did not completely close the door on a future meeting.
"A meeting between these two leaders is not entirely impossible. I think the president and the entire administration hope that one day it will happen again. But we want to make sure that there is a tangible and positive outcome from that meeting and that it is a good use of the president's time," Leavitt added.
