Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at the White House on Monday for his meeting with Donald Trump, carrying two “secret weapons”: a golf club for the US president and a letter from his wife Olena to Melania Trump.
According to Politico, the club was a symbolic gift given to Zelensky by Konstantin Kartavtsev, a young sergeant who lost his leg in the early stages of the Russian invasion while rescuing his comrades. As the Ukrainian president’s office explained, the golf was part of Kartavtsev’s rehabilitation, who recorded a message to Trump, asking him to help Ukraine and contribute to a just and lasting peace.
At the same time, Zelensky handed Trump a letter from Ukraine's first lady to Melania Trump, thanking her for her efforts to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to return 20,000 abducted Ukrainian children to their families.
"I would like to thank your wife. Because she sent a letter about our children, and the first lady of Ukraine responded to her with her own letter," Zelensky said as he handed the letter to Trump.
At the same time, the Ukrainian president did not leave empty-handed: Trump recorded a video thanking Kartavtsev and presented Zelensky with a symbolic set of White House keys.
This meeting had a distinctly different atmosphere than the previous one in February. This time, Zelensky chose a different approach. He appeared with European support and dressed in a military-style suit.
Throughout his statements to reporters, the Ukrainian president made sure to thank Trump frequently, avoiding refuting him when he incorrectly claimed that the US had allocated $300 billion in aid to Kiev, while in reality the amount amounts to around €115 billion in the period 2022-2025, according to Politico.
