Three areas of Ukraine partially or fully occupied by the Russians are the subject of negotiations. The Ukrainians also put Crimea, lost in 2014, on the table, but in fact the US administration hardly mentions it. The Russians also have troops in 1 percent of the Sumy region and 5 percent of Kharkiv.
Donbas
Donbass is the former mining and industrial center of the Soviet Union. Moscow considers it a priority and for this reason Putin demands full sovereignty over it, although his troops control about 80 percent. It is divided into two regions, attacked by local pro-Russian militias since 2014 with the full military support of Moscow: Lugansk, now occupied by 99 percent, and Donetsk by 79 percent. In February 2022, Russian commanders were convinced that they could take them within a few hours.
But Ukrainian resistance immediately proved strong. Since then, especially in Donetsk, the fiercest battles have taken place, claiming tens of thousands of lives, starting with the capture of the port city of Mariupol between March and May 2022. This was followed by the sieges of Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, Avdiivka, and the fighting for control of Pokrovsk, which continues to this day. It is estimated that around 242,700 people live in Donbass under Ukrainian control.
Kherson
In the spring of 2022, Russian columns advanced rapidly westward from the Crimean peninsula and managed to cross the bridges over the Dnieper to capture the capital. Kherson fell in early March, but by November a Ukrainian counteroffensive had pushed the Russians east of the river. Since then, the Russian army has been continuously bombing the capital, which has remained a ghost town. It is estimated that the Russians now control 71 percent of the Kherson region, and Ukrainians fear that Putin is still trying to organize an offensive from here towards Odessa.
Zaporizhia
The Zaporizhzhia region was also quickly captured by the Russians in March 2022. Today they control 74 percent of it, including the nuclear power plant along the Dnieper. The Ukrainians hold the capital and agricultural areas in the north, which are threatened by frequent bombing./Corriere della sera
