Mexican authorities have arrested a drug trafficker who is suspected of playing a key role in the events that led to the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the news was confirmed by Mexico’s Defense Ministry on Sunday.

According to the official statement, the arrested José "N", nicknamed "El Pepe", is suspected of organizing the transportation of Oseguera's romantic partner to a luxury cabin in the municipality of Tapalpa, in the western state of Jalisco.

Military intelligence services were able to track down Oseguera's location after receiving information about this meeting. According to Mexican authorities, the exact location was later confirmed by additional information provided by American intelligence.

Oseguera, who led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was fatally wounded during an elite forces operation on February 22. He had been seen earlier at a country club in Jalisco.

Authorities consider “El Pepe” one of the cartel’s main logistics operators. He was arrested in the municipality of Tlajomulco, also in Jalisco. During the operation, security forces seized drugs, weapons and a vehicle.

Oseguera was one of the most wanted figures in Mexico and was also wanted by the United States. The US had put up a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest. According to a senior DEA agent, he was considered a top priority for US federal law enforcement.

After his death, members of the CJNG cartel blocked roads in 20 of Mexico's 32 states and burned vehicles and businesses, including in the city of Guadalajara and the tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco.
