The United States has uncovered a plot to assassinate Russian dissidents in Europe. According to US court documents, investigators were able to uncover the plan thanks to the carelessness of the people involved: the hired killer communicated with his commanding officer in a way that allowed US authorities to read the messages.
When Colombia’s national police announced the arrest of a Russian citizen on suspicion of terrorist acts on February 25, the incident did not attract much international attention. Photos showed a large man in a light blue jacket and with the first signs of balding, surrounded by Colombian police officers. However, court documents later released in the United States show that the authorities had made a significant arrest. Investigations by the Russian magazine “The Insider” even suggest that an entire unit of the Russian secret service had been exposed, due to the carelessness of its members.
The background is Russia's long-standing pursuit of dissidents from the autonomous republic of Chechnya in the North Caucasus. Since the suppression of the independence movement there, Russian and Chechen agents have been pursuing fugitive separatists even in exile. Assassination attempts have occurred from time to time. In Western Europe, one of the most high-profile cases was the shooting of Selimkhan Khangoshvili in Berlin's Kleiner Tiergarten park in 2019. The imprisonment of the perpetrator, Vadim Krasikov, an assassin for the Russian FSB secret service, long soured relations between Moscow and Berlin, until the Kremlin released the agent in August 2024 in a prisoner exchange.
According to American investigations, while this case was still developing, Moscow was preparing plans for new assassinations in Europe. In 2024, the Russian secret service recruited a Serbian-speaking hitman, Darko Durovic, to eliminate two dissidents from a Russian republic. Based on the description, it is almost certainly Chechnya. The targets may have been family members of the separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev, who is believed to be in the UK.
Durovic met twice in Moscow with his Russian commanding officer, Denis Alimov, 42, the same man who is now in Colombia awaiting extradition to the United States. The federal prosecutor's indictment documents describe in detail how the conspirators operated.

The Insider magazine reported on Friday, citing its sources, that the high-ranking agent was part of a new secret service unit called “Center 795,” created just three years ago. "The Insider" refers to an organizational chart and personnel lists that were submitted to the editorial office.
