Former CNN reporter Don Lemon was arrested and taken into custody Thursday evening for filming and reporting on a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota earlier this month.
Lemon was arrested by federal agents Thursday night while in Los Angeles covering the Grammy Awards, his attorney Abe Lowell said.
Don Lemon was with dozens of protesters against Immigration and Customs Enforcement when they attacked a church in St. Paul, Minnesota, earlier this month.
They interrupted the service and fights broke out. A group of protesters claimed that one of the pastors was an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer.
"Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done. The First Amendment exists to protect journalists, whose role is to bring the truth to light and hold those in power accountable," the lawyer emphasized.
He added that instead of investigating the federal agents who killed two peaceful protesters in Minnesota, the Trump Justice Department is devoting its time, attention and resources to this arrest.
"This unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and a blatant attempt to distract attention from the multiple crises facing this administration will not pass. Don will fight these charges with energy and determination in court," the lawyer concluded.
Earlier this month, Don Lemon was present at the protest as a journalist. In a video posted from the protest, Lemon can be heard saying: "I'm just here to take pictures, I'm not part of the group, I'm a journalist."
