A ceasefire has come into effect between Thailand and Cambodia along their border, after nearly three weeks of violent clashes that have forced nearly a million civilians from their homes. The agreement was reached after days of diplomatically brokered negotiations by China and the United States. The defense ministers of the two countries agreed to freeze current troop positions, halt military reinforcements and allow the immediate return of civilians. Another 18 Cambodian soldiers held by Thailand are expected to be released within 72 hours.

The ceasefire also includes the removal of landmines in border areas. Thailand remains skeptical after the failure of the previous agreement, warning that it will reserve the right to self-defense if the ceasefire is violated. Meanwhile, both sides continue to accuse each other of starting the fighting and violating the July agreement.

The latest clashes have included airstrikes by Thailand, which Cambodia has criticized as indiscriminate attacks on civilians. While the agreement is a step toward de-escalation, its implementation will depend on political will and a halt to the nationalist rhetoric that has exacerbated the situation. Cambodia has lost significant military ground and equipment, increasing the risk of new tensions in the future.
