A court has ordered former President Donald Trump to pay $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages to author E. Jean Carroll, following rape allegations.
The total amount comes to $83.3 million in total damages.
The nine-member jury in Manhattan Federal Court began deliberating just after lunch on Friday, around 2:40 p.m. local time. After nearly three hours of discussion, they reached a unanimous decision.
Trump was not in court, as he left before the verdict was handed down. Trump reiterated his position that Ms. Carroll's claim was fabricated and that he had not raped her, but the jury found in favor of the author.
Earlier on Thursday, Ms Carroll's lawyers played video of Mr Trump's testimony in which he called her "mentally ill" and threatened to sue her.
"It's a false accusation, it never happened, there's no way it could happen," said Mr. Trump.
Carroll, 80, is seeking at least $10 million in damages related to former President Trump's June 2019 statements in which he denied raping her in the mid-1990s in the fitting rooms of a Manhattan clothing store.
Trump has accused the author Carroll of making the accusation to increase attention for the sale of her biography.
Last May, another jury ordered Mr. Trump to pay Ms. Carroll $5 million for a similar denial of her allegations in October 2022. He is appealing that order.
