European attitudes towards the US have undergone a major shift in recent months, according to military analyst Professor Michael Clarke. But in recent days, US operations in Iran have been publicly denounced by both Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Sir Keir Starmer, who suggested there was no well-thought-out workable plan for the conflict.
Clarke says there is a main reason for this change, according to him, which is Greenland and Trump's statements about the use of force on the island.
"The biggest thing was Greenland. Trump comes to Davos with these strange statements that we're going to take Greenland and if we have to use force, we will. The Europeans were so outraged by that in all sorts of ways that they said 'we have to fight back, if you want a trade war about this, we'll have a trade war, if you really want to invade Greenland, we'll send troops there. Are you going to shoot them? They challenged him and he backed down immediately ," Clarke said.
He added that the US president may have underestimated how badly his stance on Greenland was received by Europeans.
"I think Trump thought the issue was gone for a while... I don't think he understands the damage this issue has done to the transatlantic relationship. What it showed the Europeans is that we can't live with this administration and believe everything it says, at the highest level. We have to get through the Trump era - maybe it'll be another MAGA leader next, but it won't be Trump - so we have to deal with this Trump idiocy and we have to be strong. There are no prizes for being nice to this man. If you're nice to him, you have to show strength, that you're willing to deal with him if necessary ," he concluded.
