Israel's military operation against Iran has entered its second phase, during which Israeli warplanes are expected to strike underground ballistic missile bases, Reuters reported, citing two sources familiar with the military campaign plan.

According to the Israeli military, during the first phase of the operation, hundreds of Iranian missile launchers were hit, which Tel Aviv believes could be used to attack Israeli cities.

Sources cited by Reuters said the new phase of the operation would focus on missile and military equipment depots, many of which are located in protected underground installations.

One of the sources said that Israel's strategic objective is to weaken or neutralize Iran's ability to conduct air and missile strikes against Israel until the end of the war. According to the same sources, the operation also aims to hit the leadership structures of the Islamic Republic.

An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the details of the new military plan. Earlier, the Israeli military had stated that Israel and the United States had managed to take control of most of Iranian airspace during the first days of the operation.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Israeli military announced that overnight the air force struck an underground infrastructure used to store ballistic missiles, as well as missile depots intended for use against aircraft.

According to an analysis of public statements by the Israeli military since the start of the joint US-Israeli strikes, this is the first time that strikes on underground missile installations have been confirmed, Reuters notes.

Meanwhile, estimates of Iran's missile arsenal vary considerably. The Israeli military estimates that before the war Iran had about 2,500 missiles, while some security analysts believe the number could be as high as 6,000 missiles.

The amount of missiles Tehran has left could be a decisive factor in the course of the conflict, as Iran continues to carry out missile attacks on Israel and targets in the region, keeping tension high in the Middle East.
