Days before his scheduled speech to the UN General Assembly and after Britain, Canada and Australia moved to recognize a Palestinian state, Benjamin Netanyahu made it clear that Israel would oppose any such effort, which, as he stressed, "threatens our existence."
The Israeli prime minister announced a meeting with Donald Trump, while also referring to contacts with Syria that, according to him, could lead to peace agreements with Damascus and Beirut.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that in his speech to the UN he would present "the truth of Israel, but also the objective truth" about his country's fight "against the forces of evil." As he stressed, his goal is to promote a vision of "true peace, peace through strength."
Referring to international pressure for the creation of a Palestinian state, the Israeli prime minister described this development as an "absurd reward for terrorism."
"We must fight at the UN and in every other arena against the false propaganda that targets us," he said, warning that the international community will listen to Israel's positions in the coming days.
Netanyahu also announced that after his speech he would meet with United States President Donald Trump.
"This will be the fourth time I have met with my friend, President Trump, since the beginning of his second term, more than any other world leader. We have a lot to discuss," he noted.
At the same time, the Israeli prime minister revealed that the country has made progress in talks with Syria, which, he said, could pave the way for peace agreements with both Damascus and Beirut.
"Our victories against Hezbollah have opened an incredible window of opportunity. There is the prospect of peace with our northern neighbors," he said, adding that the process is still in its early stages.
According to the prime minister's office, Netanyahu is expected to convene an emergency council late tonight to consider a draft security agreement with Syria. According to Israeli sources, Damascus is seeking to secure a halt to Israeli airstrikes and a withdrawal of troops from the south of the country.
