Pope Leo XIV, standing alongside those who help the people of Gaza, once again repeated the call:
There is no future on violence, on forced displacement, or on revenge!
"Peoples need peace," he emphasized, adding: Those who truly love them work for peace!
The Pope greeted for the first time representatives of several Catholic associations that show solidarity with the residents of Gaza.
"I appreciate your initiative and many others that express closeness to our brothers and sisters who suffer in that troubled land," said the Holy Father.
Gaza under fire: 60 killed in one day
At least 60 Palestinians were killed on Saturday, September 20, during a new Israeli army offensive on Gaza City. Israeli forces have destroyed high-rise buildings and are aiming to eliminate tunnels and mined buildings. Reuters reports that Israel now controls the eastern outskirts of the city and aims to advance towards the center and west.
The Israeli government claims that nearly 500,000 people have fled Gaza since the beginning of the month, but Hamas rejects this figure, saying only 300,000 have fled, while over 900,000 residents still remain, including fewer than 50 Israeli hostages held by Hamas or other Palestinian groups.
Since the start of the occupation two years ago, following a Hamas attack in southern Israel that killed 1,200 people and kidnapped 250 others, more than 65,000 Palestinians have lost their lives.
