A gunman shot and fatally wounded former nationalist member of the Ukrainian parliament, Irina Farion, known for her outspoken campaigns in favor of protecting the Ukrainian language.
The police have launched a search for the perpetrator who allegedly shot the 60-year-old woman to death on a street in the city of Lviv. The case has been classified as "attempted murder", said shortly after the event, Minister of the Interior Ihor Klimenko.
"The victim is in critical condition and doctors are fighting to save his life," he added minutes after Farion was shot in the head.
However, according to Ukrainian media, the former MP and Ukrainian linguist did not survive her injuries and died a few hours after the attack.
The news was later confirmed by the governor of the Ukrainian city Maksim Kozhitsky, as well as by the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sandovy.

Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelensky also reacted to the incident, saying that he is following step by step the investigations for the arrest of the aggressor and added that he condemns any form of violence.
As for Fario, she joined the nationalist Svoboda (Freedom) party in 2005 and was elected to parliament for the first and last time in 2012.
She was also a member of the Lviv regional council and became known for her campaigns to promote the Ukrainian language and her disparaging comments about Russian-speaking public officials. In 2018, when Ukraine was fighting pro-Russian separatists who had seized territory in eastern Ukraine, she called on her countrymen to punch all Russian speakers in the jaw.
