First Coast Guard exercise with drone attack scenario against tankers
Greece is preparing for possible attacks from Iran, amid rising tensions in the region, according to a report by the Al Jazeera network.
Arab media reported that the Greek coast guard conducted an exercise on Tuesday, simulating a drone attack on a tanker in the Gulf of Elefsina, which caused a fire.
According to the exercise scenario, two crew members fell into the sea and were rescued, one by boat and the other by helicopter.
Greece's Merchant Marine Minister, Vasilis Kikilias, told Al Jazeera that the exercise is preventive in nature due to the current situation.
" This is a preventive exercise, as we live in uncertain times. We need to make sure we have operational capacity ," he said.
Al Jazeera points out that this is the first time that Greek authorities have conducted an exercise that includes a drone attack scenario in the country's territorial waters.
According to the report, so far the exercises have been focused mainly on marine pollution management, while recent geopolitical developments have prompted authorities to expand preparedness scenarios.
The deputy commander of the coast guard, Rear Admiral Christos Kontorouchas, stated that the current situation requires daily testing of operational capacities.
" There is an evolving geopolitical situation that forces us to test our readiness every day. It's not just pollution. Greek merchant ships are everywhere, including conflict zones ," he said.
He added that authorities must prepare the country for every possible scenario.
