The Chief of Staff of the Israeli Armed Forces, General Eyal Zamir, warned that the army risks suffering "serious damage" if the government does not adopt measures to address personnel shortages.
According to international media, Zamir made the comments in a letter to Knesset members in response to concerns over the withdrawal of a reservist battalion from the West Bank. The development is related to an incident in which some soldiers allegedly detained and assaulted CNN journalists while displaying far-right attitudes.
In the letter dated March 30, Zamir called on lawmakers to take responsibility for the situation in the army and the reservist system.
He stressed that the decision to reduce the length of compulsory military service to 30 months is expected to take effect in January, despite his previous requests to extend it.
According to him, this decision will lead to a reduction in the number of active forces and a shortage of thousands of soldiers and support personnel.
Zamir also warned that the main burden will be borne by reservists and their families, as they will be called up to service repeatedly.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government is working on a bill that would provide for complete exemption from military service for students of Haredi religious schools, despite objections from the army.
The Israeli Armed Forces have stressed that they urgently need about 12,000 new recruits, mainly for combat roles, due to the continued pressure on active and reserve troops following the start of the war on October 7, 2023.
