Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has opposed the ground offensive in Rafah, as she has shown the potential "devastating" effects on civilians.
"More than half of Gaza's 2.3 million people are taking refuge in Rafah, escaping fighting elsewhere. The impacts on Palestinian civilians from a large-scale military operation would be devastating," she wrote on the X social network.
The foreign minister calls for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. She writes that she supports the work of Qatar, the United States and Egypt to broker an agreement.
"I call for a humanitarian ceasefire to allow for the release of hostages and aid. I support the continued work of Qatar, the United States and Egypt to broker an agreement ," Wong concluded.
