A drone struck downtown Tel Aviv, killing one person and injuring several others a few meters from the US embassy. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that an 'air target' exploded in Tel Aviv.
A spokesman for the Houthi armed forces said in a social media post on Friday that the Yemen-based group had "targeted" Tel Aviv.
Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said the city was on high alert after the drone attack in which one person was killed.
"The fight is still fierce and painful. Law enforcement arrived quickly on the ground and we are prepared for any development. I urge the public to obey the instructions," he said.
The Israeli Air Force, despite identifying the drone over Tel Aviv, did not shoot it down "due to human error," the military spokesman said. He said that the Air Force takes full responsibility as the protector of the country's skies.
"The drone directly hit an apartment after entering the city from the sea. The origin of the drone is still under investigation," he said.
The US Department of Defense said there were no injuries or damage to the Tel Aviv embassy from the attack.
The American embassy, which is a branch of the official one in Jerusalem, is located not far from the site of the explosion that caused one death and several injuries.
