Trump's adventure with Iran, 4 reasons why America was humiliated
Donald Trump

When President Donald Trump attacked Iran on February 28, we called his decision reckless. He went to war without seeking congressional approval and without the support of most allies. He offered weak and contradictory justifications to the American public and failed to explain why this naive attempt at regime change would end any better than previous U.S. efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.

Over the next six weeks, the reckless nature of this war has become even clearer. He ignored careful military planning and acted on instinct and whim. After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu predicted to Trump that the attacks would provoke a popular uprising in Iran, the CIA director called the idea “ridiculous,” according to The New York Times.

Yet Trump pressed on. He prepared no plan to respond to a predictable Iranian countermeasure: raising oil prices by blocking the Strait of Hormuz. Nor did he develop a workable strategy for securing the enriched uranium that Iran could use to rebuild its nuclear program.

Last week, he went from illegal and immoral threats to wipe out Iranian civilization to a last-minute ceasefire that accomplishes few of the declared war aims. Iran continues to defy a key part of the deal and block most traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump's irresponsibility has left the US on the brink of a humiliating strategic defeat.

As previously noted, the Iranian regime deserves no sympathy. It has oppressed its own people for decades and supported terrorism abroad. The current war, along with the June attacks by the US and Israel and Israeli operations since 2023, have weakened Iran in several important ways. Its naval, air, and air defense forces have been damaged, while its nuclear program has been curtailed. Its regional network of allies, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the deposed government of Syria, has been weakened.

Yet these achievements cannot hide the ways in which the war has weakened the United States. Four major consequences for American national interests emerge as a direct result of this careless approach. These consequences also weaken global democracy, at a time when authoritarian regimes in China, Russia, and elsewhere are feeling increasingly empowered.

The most tangible blow is Iran’s growing influence over the global economy through its control of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes. Before the war, Iranian leaders feared that blocking it would bring new sanctions and a military attack. After the attack happened anyway, Iran closed the strait to almost all traffic except its own ships. Opening it by force would require a major military operation and perhaps a prolonged occupation.

Trump’s lack of foresight on this point shows a marked incompetence. The two-week ceasefire does not restore the previous situation, as Iran continues restrictions and has threatened to impose tariffs. The war has shown Tehran that control of this route is a real possibility, giving it a diplomatic advantage that was previously unimaginable.

The second consequence is the weakening of the US military position. The war has consumed a significant part of the stockpile of weapons, such as Tomahawk missiles and Patriot systems. Restoring these stocks will take years and will force Washington to make difficult choices about the distribution of military power. At the same time, the conflict has also shown its vulnerability to new forms of warfare, where cheap drones can challenge expensive technologies.

The third consequence is related to alliances. Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, and most of Western Europe refused to support the US. These countries are strengthening cooperation among themselves to balance American influence, seeing Washington as less trustworthy.

The fourth consequence is the damage to the moral authority of the United States. Threats to annihilate Iranian civilization and aggressive statements by American officials contradict the principles that the United States has historically promoted since World War II. This approach undermines its claim to lead a global order based on freedom and human dignity.

The war has brought casualties and destruction to several countries, including Iran, Israel, and the Gulf states, as well as losses to the US military. The weakening of the US, according to the analysis, directly benefits authoritarian regimes.

According to the analysis's conclusion, the best hope remains for President Trump to recognize the failures of his unilateral approach and engage Congress and allies to minimize the damage caused by the war./ Adapted from the New York Times
