The case that has shocked international public opinion has entered its final phase, with the judiciary in the Netherlands issuing a historic sentence for the Al Najjar family. The 53-year-old Syrian father, Khaled al-Najjar, was found guilty of the brutal murder of his 18-year-old daughter, Ryan, in an act described as an "honor crime" because the young girl chose to live by Western standards.
The tragedy occurred in May 2024, when Ryan disappeared from her home in Rotterdam. Six days later, authorities were faced with a horrific sight: in a swampy and isolated area of the nature reserve in Lelystad, the 18-year-old was found bound hand and foot, her mouth taped shut and dumped in the mud.
The forensic investigation revealed a shocking detail that testifies to the victim's final moments: her father's DNA was found under her fingernails, proving that the girl fought desperately for her life before he strangled her with his own hands.
The court showed no mercy to Ryan's two brothers, Mohammed, 23, and Muhannad, 25. According to the indictment, the two boys not only knew about the murderous plot, but were also the ones who transported their sister from Rotterdam to the isolated swamp. They were sentenced to 20 years in prison each, with the court criticizing the complete lack of remorse and the absence of one of them at trial.
The motive behind the brutality is shocking. The family considered it "shameful" that the 18-year-old had social media accounts and was living a free-spirited lifestyle, far from their strict traditions. To "wash away" this perceived insult, the father and sons set a deadly trap in their blood.
The 53-year-old father, who allegedly fled to Syria to avoid arrest, was sentenced in absentia to 30 years in prison.
