As Trump dismantles the norms of international law in Venezuela and threatens its neighbors, Europe chooses the ostrich: not to see, not to hear, not to speak.
The initial reaction of European leaders to Donald Trump's illegal military intervention in Venezuela was not only weak – it was also short-lived.
On Sunday, European Union member states refused to openly condemn the attack as a flagrant violation of international law. Instead, they hoped for a “negotiated, democratic, inclusive and peaceful solution, led by Venezuelans themselves.”
But this illusory statement was rejected by the American President himself, who told reporters that same day: "We are in charge."
Trump also repeated threats of further military action if the regime left after the ouster of Nicolás Maduro did not comply with Washington’s orders. From the outset, Trump showed that the will of the Venezuelan people was not a priority, a fact also clear from the early exclusion of the well-known opposition figure, María Corina Machado, who has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Operation “Absolute Determination” was not about democracy, but about clean power and control of Venezuela’s future oil reserves.
In the face of these naked imperialist ambitions and contempt for international rules, European leaders like Keir Starmer and his allies can no longer be content with shameless evasion and diversion. After initially stressing the need for a democratic transition in Venezuela, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that he “neither supported nor approved” the manner in which Maduro was toppled. Sir Keir, who has so far been vague and ambivalent on the issue, should do the same. When the chairwoman of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, Emily Thornberry, warns that US actions in Venezuela are emboldening global bullying, it is clear that she is right.
For their part, European governments must seriously prepare for a world in which the traditional concept of the “West” no longer works. The reluctance to criticize Trump stems in part from a fear of damaging relations with the White House, especially at a crucial moment for support for Ukraine. It is true that without real US security guarantees for Kiev, Putin’s revanchist ambitions would be significantly strengthened. But “America First” imperialism, unchecked and unchallenged, is itself becoming a new geopolitical threat.
Together with the United Nations, Europe has an obligation to firmly oppose the subversion of international law by superpowers that encroach on their “spheres of influence.” European leaders must accelerate the building of sufficient military and strategic power to defend their interests. Otherwise, they will no longer have any influence.
The example is shocking: Trump's reassertion of claims to Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared in a radio interview that this threat from the US should be taken seriously. The very fact that such a statement can be made with sincerity and reason shows that we are in a new global reality.
The regime change in Caracas came just weeks after the release of an aggressive new US national security strategy, which promised to “re-establish American supremacy in the Western Hemisphere.” Colombia and Cuba are now next on the list, and shockingly, so is NATO ally Denmark.
Under Washington’s leadership, a new world order, dangerous and unstable, is emerging at a rapid pace. Within this order, Europe has the urgency and moral obligation to speak up for its values, while building the capacity to defend its national and regional interests. /Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “The Guardian”

Ajo në mënyrë të vazhdueshme e ka shpërdoruar çdo lloj marrëdhënje në favor të saj. Presidenri Trump, ndryshe nga Europa, e lexon saktë çdo lëvizje të Rusisë dhe Kinës: konkurrenca e afërme do të jetë në dy zonat polare dhe hapësira. Çdo lëvizje e sotme, përfshirë Venezuelën e Groenlandën, i shërben përgatitjes për pozicionim për momentin kur konkurencat dhe konflikti do të marrë një formë shumë të hapur e të ashpër.
