The EU condemns Russia for pushing migrants towards the border with Finland

The European Union on Friday accused Russia of "shameful" use of migrants to increase pressure on other countries, saying it had noticed an increase in the number of undocumented asylum seekers crossing Russia's border with Finland.

Helsinki has announced on Thursday that it will close four of the eight border points with Russia over the weekend, due to the increase in the number of asylum seekers.

The Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo, has said that Russia is aiming to destabilize his country, after the decision to join NATO, earlier in the year.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke to Orpo on Thursday, and said that Russia's "instrumentalization of migrants" is "something shameful".

European Union spokesman Christian Wigand said on Friday that Brussels has noticed an increase in undocumented asylum seekers from the Russian Federation in Finland.

" We are closely following the situation. We are in contact with the Finnish authorities and the Finnish border guard" , he said.

Helsinki's ties with Moscow have worsened since Russia's start of war in Ukraine in February 2022. Something like this has prompted Finland to abandon its neutral stance and join NATO, to increase the country's security.

This Nordic country shares a border of 1,340 kilometers with Russia. It is reported that 280 asylum seekers went to Finland in September alone.

Brussels has in the past accused Russia's ally Belarus of encouraging thousands of undocumented migrants to cross the border into Poland and Lithuania in retaliation for European bloc sanctions. In August, Poland accused Russia and Belarus of orchestrating the new flow of migration./ REL
