EU declares Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization

The European Union has taken an important political and diplomatic step by designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The decision was confirmed by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, who stressed that repression cannot go unanswered.

She emphasized that the European Union Foreign Ministers have taken a joint and decisive decision to include the IRGC on the list of terrorist organizations, considering this measure as a necessary response to the violence and oppression exercised by the Iranian regime against its own people.

"Repression cannot go unanswered. EU Foreign Ministers have just taken the decisive step of designating Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization. Any regime that kills thousands of its own people is working towards its own destruction," she said on "X".

The decision was also welcomed by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who described the measure as overdue but necessary. She stated that the new sanctions and the declaration of the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization are a fair response to a regime that, according to her, has violently suppressed the protests of its citizens. Von der Leyen emphasized that Europe stands with the Iranian people in their struggle for freedom and fundamental rights.

"This was long overdue. Terrorist is really how you call a regime that brutally suppresses the protests of its own people. Europe stands with the people of Iran in their courageous fight for freedom ," Von der Leyen said.

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, also praised the decision as a courageous and fair step, emphasizing that the European Union has shown unity and determination. She underlined that this determination, considered impossible until a few weeks ago, is the result of the continuous efforts of European institutions to hold regimes that violate human rights accountable.

" Europe stands up to be counted. Designating the oppressive Iranian regime's IRGC as a terrorist organization is the right decision, which even a few weeks ago many called impossible. Proud of the sustained and unified effort of the European Parliament that helped drive this progress. Now, the time to stand strong. Iran will be free," Metsola said.

According to European officials, the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization strengthens the EU's stance against state repression and violence, sending a clear message of support for Iranian citizens and their efforts for democracy and freedom.
