Peace in Ukraine is only possible under one condition

While international attention is returning to the possibility of resuming talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, the prospect of a peace agreement remains contingent on developments on the ground. A short-term peace or a lasting ceasefire would only be possible if the military balance shifts significantly to Russia's detriment, to the extent that the Kremlin has a real interest in stopping the fighting.

In such a scenario, the war could be followed by a one- or two-year pause, during which the situation in Ukraine would be attempted to stabilize. This time would serve the Western allies to significantly strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities, transforming it into a heavily armed state that would be difficult to attack again. Such a Ukraine would function as a strategic deterrent to any new Russian military adventures and would be perceived by many European countries as a form of political and security victory.

However, the realization of this scenario first requires a decisive military development, specifically a push back of Russian forces at the front. Currently, such a counteroffensive does not seem possible in the first half of this year, due to operational constraints and the lack of sufficient capabilities on the ground. The possibility of more credible military action will directly depend on the type and quantity of armaments that Ukraine will receive from its allies.

In this context, spring 2026 is seen as the earliest date when either side might have the capacity to launch a major offensive. Even then, it remains unclear whether realistic conditions would allow for such an escalation, as both Ukraine and Russia face serious military, economic, and human constraints.

As a result, the prospect of peace remains closely linked to developments on the battlefield and the willingness of international actors to invest in a long-term security strategy for Ukraine, rather than a quick diplomatic solution./ Skynews
