Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin stated in an interview with Russian media that Serbia should choose BRICS (the alliance led by Russia and China) instead of the EU.
Serbia applied for EU membership in 2009 and has been a candidate since 2012, but the bloc has demanded recognition of Kosovo as a condition for membership.
"BRICS does not demand anything from Serbia and offers more than we could wish for. The EU is demanding everything from us and I am no longer sure what it has to offer. We see BRICS as an opportunity and an alternative. "Serbia is very closely investigating all the possibilities presented by BRICS and closer cooperation with its member states ," Vulin told RIA Novosti on Monday.
According to Vulin, Serbia expects an official invitation to the BRICS summit, scheduled for the end of October in Kazan, Russia. Despite heavy pressure from Brussels, Belgrade has not joined the US and EU embargo against Moscow, formally pledging neutrality in the Ukraine conflict and maintaining trade relations with Russia and the West.
According to Vulin, this has put Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić at risk of "color revolution" and even assassination.
" Something happens to everyone who calls for a peaceful solution to Ukraine, so they get shot ," Vulin said, noting the attempted assassination of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and former US President Donald Trump.
Vulin further added that Serbia wants peace and does not agree with those EU and NATO members who seek to achieve the impossible goal of defeating Russia with a proxy war.
"Peace in Ukraine could have been achieved in Istanbul. But that didn't happen because those who make the decisions about peace in Ukraine are not from Ukraine and want to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian ," Vulin said, referring to Turkey-brokered talks between Moscow and Kiev.
