US President Joe Biden has warned that the threat of Vladimir Putin using tactical nuclear weapons is "real".
Speaking at an event in California yesterday, Biden said people looked at him like he was "crazy" when he raised concerns about the Russian leader's possible use of weapons.
"It's true," he said, in a warning that comes a few days after he called the movement of arms in Belarus "absolutely irresponsible."
However, military analysts at the Institute for the Study of War struck a different tone with their latest commentary on the arms transfer from Russia to Belarus.
In its latest update on the conflict, the US-based institute said it had "long assessed" that Moscow would likely seek to keep tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus "in order to consolidate de facto control" of its neighbor - but she "maintains that this deployment is very unlikely to have impacts on the battlefield in Ukraine."
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko told Russian state television last week that his country had begun receiving the weapons, some of which he said were three times more powerful than the atomic bombs the US dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
