"My son, I did everything I could to make you happy"/ A heartbreaking

" Ghaith, your mother's heart and soul, I ask you not to cry for me, but to pray for me, so that I may remain calm ."

These words begin the letter that Palestinian journalist Mariam Abu Dagga wrote to her son, Ghaith. A kind of spiritual testament dictated by the situation she found herself in: at the heart of the war between Israel and Hamas, surrounded by bombs and hunger, where even journalists are in danger.

Mariam Abu Dagga, a freelance journalist for various publications, including the Associated Press, died this morning during an Israeli army raid on the Nasser Hospital complex in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Before she died, Dagga wrote a few sentences to her twelve-year-old son, Ghaith, from whom she was separated at the beginning of the war, when he was evacuated. In the letter, translated and shared by Patrick Zaki on social media, the journalist addresses Ghaith directly: " I want you to hold your head high, to study, to be excellent and distinguished, and to become a man of value, capable of facing life, my love."

"Don't forget that I did everything I could to make you happy, comfortable and at peace, and that everything I did was for you. When you grow up, get married and have a daughter, call her Mariam ," she writes.
