Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a phone call that lasted a full 2 hours and 28 minutes, where they discussed the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire.
According to a post by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino on his X account, the two leaders had a comprehensive and productive phone conversation.
The Kremlin reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump confirmed their intention to continue their efforts to resolve the Ukraine issue.
While all eyes are on Russian leader Putin regarding achieving a permanent ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, a "30-day non-aggression pact" emerged from a phone conversation between the two leaders yesterday.
After the Russian leader declared last week that "I can accept a ceasefire, but there are some obstacles to a long-term solution," he accepted some of Trump's suggestions at yesterday's meeting and left others for later talks.
The Kremlin statement, which said the two leaders continued a detailed exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine, said Putin agreed to halt attacks on energy facilities and infrastructure in Ukraine for 30 days and they would mutually exchange 175 prisoners of war. The statement said Russia and the United States would form expert groups on the Ukraine deal.
The Kremlin also announced that the situation in the Russian territory of the Kursk region, which the Ukrainian army entered in August 2024, was also discussed. According to the Kremlin, Trump supported Putin's proposal to organize a match between players from the National Hockey League in North America and the Kontinental Hockey League in Eurasia, and noted that the two leaders agreed to maintain contact on all issues discussed during the meeting.
The White House said in a statement that Trump and Putin agreed that the Russia-Ukraine war should end with a "lasting peace" and that comprehensive negotiations should continue. The statement noted that the Russia-Ukraine war was a war that should never have started or should have ended long ago and explained: "The leaders agreed that the process towards peace should begin with a ceasefire on infrastructure and energy, as well as the implementation of a naval ceasefire in the Black Sea, while technical negotiations towards a full ceasefire and permanent peace will continue."
The two leaders also agreed on an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and that they shared the view that "Iran should never be in a position to destroy Israel."
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said they welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's request to sit at the negotiating table as soon as possible to achieve peace, adding, "however, there is a question of who we will sit at the table with. The Ukrainian president is forbidden to negotiate with the Russian side."
What was agreed?
*Russia agreed to a 30-day pause in attacks on land, air and sea, but only on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, instead of Trump's 30-day proposal for a complete ceasefire.
* He also urged Ukraine not to target Russian infrastructure. Putin, who listed Russia's demands to Trump for a more comprehensive ceasefire on the front lines, was reported to have said: "In order for a comprehensive ceasefire to be possible, first of all, the general mobilization in Ukraine must end, in addition, third countries must stop all arms deliveries to Ukraine."
* The meeting also discussed the safety of merchant ships in the waters of the Black Sea. Stressing that he viewed Trump's proposal for safe trade in the Black Sea positively, Putin agreed to begin the necessary talks between the two countries.
* The Kremlin statement emphasized that instead of a partial ceasefire, Putin should continue to work on a two-state solution formula, taking into account and eliminating the root cause of the crisis in Ukraine.
* Putin reportedly thanked Trump for his desire to help achieve the noble goal of ending conflicts and human casualties.
