Washington and Tehran have been claiming victory from their own perspectives since a ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan. The question that immediately arose was what the parties agreed to and on what basis did the peace talks begin?

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majdi Takht Ravanchi says the 10-point plan proposed by Tehran has been agreed upon as a basis for negotiations.

"We have always welcomed diplomacy, but not talks based on false information aimed at deception," he said, adding that Tehran does not support a ceasefire that would allow an adversary to rearm and resume attacks.

In contrast, US Vice President JD Vance warned Tehran not to "play games" with the US as he heads to Islamabad for talks aimed at ending the war with Iran. US Vice President JD Vance also said he looks forward to negotiations with Iran, adding that President Donald Trump has given clear guidelines for the talks. He said he believes the negotiations will have a positive outcome.

Negotiations on the verge of collapse

Meanwhile, Pakistan has prepared to welcome Iranian and American delegations for talks, with Iranian participation uncertain, following Israeli attacks that caused over 300 deaths in Lebanon, putting the ceasefire in jeopardy.

The Israeli attacks, the deadliest in Lebanon since the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran on February 28, make "negotiations meaningless," Iranian President Masoud Pesekian said Thursday.

"The continuation of talks aimed at ending the war depends on the US respecting its commitments regarding the ceasefire on all fronts, especially in Lebanon," Ismail Baghaei, a spokesman for Iranian diplomacy, said, according to the Isna news agency.

At the time of the announcement of the ceasefire between "Iran, the US and their allies", which is now in its third day, Pakistan, a country that has taken on a mediating role in this conflict with thousands of deaths in the Middle East, stressed that the ceasefire would apply "everywhere, including Lebanon". However, this was later rejected by the Israelis and the Americans.

The ghost town of Islamabad

Under tight security, Islamabad has become almost a ghost town after a two-day holiday was declared, Thursday and Friday. The luxury hotel that welcomes the delegations has been emptied of its usual customers.

US Vice President JD Vance is leading the US delegation to Pakistan for talks with Iran, accompanied by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, the White House announced.

Trump's optimism

Speaking to NBC News, the US president said he was "very optimistic" about the possibility of reaching a peace agreement, despite the gap in the two countries' positions.

Even less certainty from the Iranian side. Shortly after announcing via X that an Iranian delegation would arrive in Pakistan on Thursday evening for talks with the US, the Iranian ambassador in Islamabad deleted the post. The message was posted prematurely, an embassy official explained to AFP, without specifying whether the Iranian delegation was still expected in Islamabad.

Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, in a tweet last night, described Israel as "evil" and a "curse on humanity," accusing it of committing genocide in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office called the message "shameful."

The message followed Israeli bombings the day before Wednesday that killed more than 300 people and injured about 1,000 others in Lebanon, a country that was drawn into the war when the pro-Iranian Lebanese organization Hezbollah fired rockets toward Israel in retaliation for the US-Israeli attack on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. /Pamphlet/
