Mass protests are expected today in Greece. 5,500 policemen, helicopters and dozens of fire engines have been put on red alert to maintain order during the protests that will be organized in memory of the 50th anniversary of the student uprising of the Athens Polytechnic.
The police have announced that the center of Athens will be closed to vehicles from 1 p.m. until the end of the protests, while the Panepistimio, Sindagma, Evangelizmos and Megaro Muzikis metro stations will also be closed.
The authorities fear that the protests will be violent, so they have asked the participants not to engage in acts of violence against the police and citizens' property.
Meanwhile, the Athens police department stated that its forces will escort in advance any suspect who participates in or organizes acts of violence.
