US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has promised today that the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt "will be open" after the meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
"Rafah will be open," he said. " We are deciding with the UN, with Egypt, with Israel, with others, the mechanism by which we get the aid and get it to the people who need it."
Israel has closed its two border crossings with Gaza and imposed a "complete siege" on the territory, blocking fuel, electricity and water supplies. This has left the Rafah crossing as the only possible exit to get people and supplies out of the enclave.

Blinken also announced President Joe Biden's appointment of David Satterfield, former US ambassador to Turkey, to help coordinate relief efforts. According to Blinken, Satterfield will be in Israel on Monday to begin coordination.
