World in anxiety/ Iranian threat of attacks on British bases, London moves

The United Kingdom has begun redeploying Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft and other military assets to the Middle East, in response to a direct warning from Iran that it will target the bases of Western allies if they help Israel in its increasingly bitter conflict with Tehran.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, during his trip to the G7 summit in Canada, did not rule out the possibility of Britain providing military support to Israel, as it did in October last year, during a ballistic missile attack by Iran.

So far, the UK has not taken part in any military action since the start of Israel's air strikes on Friday, but Starmer stressed that the country is acting cautiously and strategically.

“I won’t go into detail,” the British prime minister told reporters. “These are operational decisions. The situation is evolving, so I won’t go into detail, but we are moving assets, including fighter jets, to the region. This is part of preparing for any possible scenario.”

Starmer also did not comment on reports suggesting that Britain had no prior knowledge of the Israeli strikes that sparked the most severe military escalation between Tel Aviv and Tehran in decades.

“I won’t talk about what information we had at that point or what we’ve received since then,” he said. “But we are in constant discussions with our allies, including the United States, and the exchange of information is ongoing,” he added.

The movement of British troops and aircraft to the region comes amid fears of further escalation that could involve other regional actors and turn the conflict into a wider war.
