The tragic events of Saturday in Minnesota, where state representative Melissa Hortman was killed and Senator John Hoffman was seriously injured, have shaken not only local politics but also national public opinion. Both were prominent figures in the Minnesota Democratic Party, with prominent contributions to social issues, education and clean energy.
Melissa Hortman , 54, was one of the most prominent progressive politicians in the state. She had served in the House of Representatives since 2005 and had held the position of Speaker of the House for several terms, one of the most powerful in the state hierarchy. Hortman was known for her commitment to environmental protection, the promotion of renewable energy, and legislation for social and economic justice. She also had a high profile at the national level as a strong voice for women's rights and voting.
She was shot dead in her Brooklyn Park apartment by an assailant disguised as a police officer. Her husband, Mark, also died at the scene. Police arrived at the scene after an emergency call at around 3:30 a.m., but the assailant opened fire on them and fled.
Senator John Hoffman , on the other hand, was at his home in Champlin when he was shot along with his wife. They were rushed to the hospital and are in stable condition. Hoffman, 56, has been a senator since 2012 and is known for his work in the areas of special education, health care and advocacy for vulnerable groups.
Both politicians had built careers based on dialogue, public service and inclusive politics. The attack on them, considered politically motivated by the authorities, was seen as a direct attack on democratic institutions and the security of elected representatives.
In terms of dynamics, the first attack occurred around 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning, when police were called to the home of state senator John Hoffman. He and his wife had been shot and were found in critical condition. The immediate response of law enforcement and emergency medical care were crucial to the couple's survival.
About an hour later, at around 3:35 a.m., officers patrolling near Melissa Hortman's apartment noticed a police vehicle parked with its emergency lights on. A man dressed as a police officer was standing near the door, and as soon as he emerged from the apartment, he opened fire on them. According to Drew Evans, director of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCA), the exchange of gunfire was immediate, but the shooter managed to escape.
Investigations so far suggest that the same person is responsible for both attacks. The attacker used a sophisticated strategy of impersonating police to enter the residences of senior officials, raising serious concerns for the safety of officials and citizens.
The operation to capture him is large-scale and involves Brooklyn Park Police, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, State Patrol, FBI and BCA agents. Authorities have warned citizens not to open the door to anyone who is not clearly identified and to immediately call 911 if they have any suspicions.
