There were gifts her children had given her at school, family photos of the Assads on vacation, underwater photos of the Damascus tyrant swimming...
We've seen a lot of the Assads' palace, but in an affluent neighborhood of Damascus, their family home, where they actually lived, was revealed.
What was revealed inside was shocking. It was clear that the dictator's wife, of British origin Asma, liked to hang out there. It was her holy place, where she kept her treasures.

The robbers had gotten there first, the place was ransacked, but in Asma's personal room, the floor was covered with countless boxes of jewelry, antiques, and designer goods.
But what we saw revealed the life of luxury she and her family led while her husband orchestrated the murder of hundreds of thousands of his people, who lived in abject poverty.
Downstairs, envelopes with documents. Among them are the bank details in Asma's maiden name, for staggering amounts of money.

In interviews, Syria's first lady insisted that the Assads lived a middle-class life. Few were deceived, but the extent of this deception is becoming clear.

The Assads had clearly fled in a hurry. In the Asad family home, we find Asma holding onto her cherished memories of family life - all left behind.
There were gifts her children had given her at school, family photos of the Assads on vacation, underwater photos of the Damascus tyrant swimming.

On a shelf we found pictures of the day Asma and Bashar got married. She looks adoringly into his eyes. He had brought her to Damascus from her life in London to a new one in Syria.

A life that would bring her untold wealth and power, but would ultimately see her forced to leave the country in disgrace.

The question for Syrians will be, what happened to all her and her husband's millions? /Adapted from Sky News
