Details revealed from Trump's meeting with Tony Blair and Jared Kushner on Gaza yesterday
The meeting called by President Donald Trump on Wednesday at the White House to discuss a post-war plan for Gaza included two high-profile guests, Jared Kushner and Tony Blair, as well as a surprise third: Israeli official Ron Dermer.
According to sources, Dermer told the assembled officials that Israel does not want to keep Gaza occupied for long, but is forced to seek an acceptable alternative to Hamas to govern the enclave. Kushner and Blair have received Trump's blessing to continue developing such a plan, although they still have no concrete answer as to who will take over Gaza.
The meeting lasted more than an hour and was attended by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff and several other senior administration officials. Kushner and Blair presented some ideas that they had previously discussed with Witkoff and others, but not directly with Trump. “ They tried to provide a vision for how Gaza could be governed and how to create an environment for investment and reconstruction. The goal was to present these ideas to the president to see if he supported them and if he wanted to move forward, so that Witkoff and Rubio could use them ,” said a source familiar with the discussions.
At the end of the meeting, Trump demanded to hear the Israeli point of view and asked his team to call Ron Dermer, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's most powerful adviser. Dermer was already at the White House to present to Rubio and Witkoff Israel's operational plan for the occupation of Gaza City and a humanitarian program during the operation.
“ The president wanted to hear from him what Israel’s needs and red lines are in the post-war scenario ,” another source said. According to him, Dermer made it clear that Israel does not want to maintain the occupation of Gaza indefinitely and does not intend to expel the Palestinian population, despite several proposals from within the government. He stressed that the goal is to hand Gaza over to another party, but not Hamas. “ Dermer’s message was: as long as our conditions are met, we are flexible on everything else. ”
A “day-after” plan for Gaza is seen as a key element of any diplomatic initiative to end a war that has killed more than 62,000 Palestinians over the past two years. But rebuilding a completely destroyed territory and creating a political and security architecture that is acceptable to all parties seems an enormous challenge. Wednesday’s meeting produced no concrete decisions, but it highlighted that the biggest question remains: who will be able to take over Gaza from Hamas.
The Israeli operation to attack and occupy Gaza City, an initiative that Trump has publicly supported, is expected to intensify in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Hamas has accepted a ceasefire and hostage deal brokered by Qatar and Egypt, but Netanyahu is under intense pressure, both domestically and internationally, to do the same. For now, he is continuing the offensive, and it is unclear whether discussions about a post-war plan will influence his decisions.
According to the sources, the work of Kushner and Blair is still in the intermediate stage and it is not known how long it will take to finalize a detailed plan. They have not yet defined a proposal for the governance of Gaza and for security guarantees. However, the White House sees this plan as a necessary instrument that should be ready by the time the Israeli operation is over. “The goal is for the US to lead the effort to find an internationally acceptable governance structure for Gaza, which will allow Israel to withdraw without returning to the old reality of insecurity,” said a source involved in the process. /Adapted by “Pamphlet” from “Axios”
