US President Donald Trump has expressed his displeasure over the latest wave of Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, which have killed at least 15 people and damaged several buildings. The news was announced by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, who stressed that the president will issue an additional statement on the situation later on Thursday.
“The president was not happy with the news, but he was not surprised either. These are two countries that have been at war for a very long time,” Leavitt said. She added that the Russian attacks have been deadly, while the Ukrainian strikes in August have also caused significant damage to Russian oil refineries.
Trump, according to Leavitt, remains determined to end the war, however he is aware that "perhaps neither side is yet ready to end the conflict on its own."
The reaction comes nearly two weeks after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where he pledged to broker a ceasefire. However, so far there has been little progress and the fighting continues at high intensity.
Meanwhile, US special envoy Steve Witkoff has announced that he will meet with Ukrainian representatives this Friday in New York, in an attempt to revive discussions on a temporary ceasefire.
