US Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington to keep her job after President Donald Trump announced this week that he was firing her. Cook is a member of the board that sets interest rates and one of the most important figures at the US central bank.
Her lawsuit, filed Thursday morning, asks a judge to declare the president's decision illegal and confirm that she remains an active member of the Federal Reserve Board. A hearing for a temporary restraining order is scheduled for Friday morning before Judge Jia Cobb, an appointee of former President Joe Biden.
The process could turn into a high-profile legal battle, with major implications for both the Fed's independence and the power of the US presidency. Trump has been criticized for trying to expand his influence over institutions that have traditionally been shielded from direct political influence.
In its request, Cook's lawyers argue that without urgent intervention there is a risk of creating a premature vacancy on the board, which President Trump has expressed a willingness to fill immediately.
The White House, however, is defending the president's decision. Spokesperson Kush Desai said Thursday that the removal was legal: "The president determined that there were justifiable grounds to remove a governor who had been credibly accused of lying in financial documents from a highly sensitive position overseeing financial institutions. Removing a governor for misconduct enhances the accountability and credibility of the Federal Reserve Board to both the markets and the American people."
The case is being seen as a significant test of the limits of presidential power over one of the world's most important economic institutions.
