The British government is considering the possibility of creating a single market for trade in goods with the European Union as part of a new phase of post-Brexit relations, the BBC reported, with the topic expected to be discussed at the upcoming summit between London and Brussels.
The proposal represents an important step towards economic rapprochement between the United Kingdom and the EU, several years after the British exit from the European bloc.
For weeks, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves have publicly called for a closer economic relationship with the European Union.
A European Commission spokesman did not comment directly on the British proposal, but stressed that there are opportunities to expand industrial and defense cooperation between the two sides, also mentioning the United Kingdom's interest in discussions on loans for Ukraine.
According to British media, business groups in the United Kingdom have been informed of the plan, while within the EU there are reservations regarding the red lines set by London, such as opposition to freedom of movement.
Some British ministers believe that recent changes in relations between the US and Europe could bring a more flexible approach from European countries to deeper economic reintegration between Britain and the EU.
"A European Commission spokesman declined to comment on the UK proposal," the Guardian reported.
"We see opportunities to deepen defense industrial cooperation ," said the European Commission spokesperson.
