David Cameron has just made his first statement as Foreign Secretary, moments after leaving Downing Street and entering the Foreign Office.
In a post on 'X', the former prime minister said he was delighted to accept the post, saying the UK was facing daunting international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East.
He continued: " In this time of profound global change, it has rarely been more important for this country to stand by our allies, strengthen our partnerships and make sure our voices are heard. "
He said that although he has not been in politics for seven years since he resigned as prime minister after the Brexit vote, he hopes his experience as a Conservative leader will serve Britain well.
"I hope that my experience as Conservative leader for eleven years and Prime Minister for six years - will help me to help the Prime Minister meet these vital challenges," Cameron said.
He said Britain is a "truly international country" with Britons and businesses "in every corner of the globe".
"Working to help ensure stability and security on the global stage is essential and entirely in our national interest. International security is vital to our domestic security."
Addressing his previous criticism of Mr Sunak's decisions, such as scrapping HS2, Cameron said: " While I may have disagreed with some individual decisions, it is clear to me that Rishi Sunak is a strong and capable Prime Minister , who is showing exemplary leadership in a difficult moment ".
He continued: " I want to help him deliver the security and prosperity our country needs and be part of the strongest possible team serving the UK that can be presented to the country when the general election comes around. general ".
Concluding his statement, Mr Cameron said he believes in public service, which is what motivated him to enter politics in the first place.
He praised the UK's foreign services as well as his predecessor, saying: " I know from my time in office that they are made up of brilliant, patriotic and hard-working people. They have been well led by James Cleverly, with whom I look forward to working with in his vital new role. It will be an honor to serve our country alongside our dedicated FCDO staff and provide the leadership and continued support they deserve. "
