The journalists of Italy's public media, RAI, want to go on strike to protest against the attempts of far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The Asigrai union has called for a 24-hour strike on May 6 and 7, after talks with RAI leaders failed to avoid reservations.
The main reason for the strike is the "strict control of journalistic work" and the "attempt to reduce RAI to a government mouthpiece," the union said. The lack of personnel and the poor conditions of the labor contracts are also criticized.
Another union, Unirai, declared that it will not participate in the strike. She called the strike "political". RAI should return to a "pluralist" reporting media.
Doubts about the independence of the Italian public media, RAI, are increasing since Meloni's government came to power in 2022. Last weekend there were accusations that RAI stopped publishing an article by an author critical of Meloni. This author was scheduled to deliver a speech on the eve of liberation day. Italy celebrates every year on April 25 as the day of the defeat of fascism and Nazism in the Second World War.

Scurati was invited by RAI to give a speech on the day of liberation from fascism. But shortly before the show, they canceled his invitation, not allowing him to give the speech. The moderator of the show did not want to accept such a thing and resolutely read his words directly on the broadcast in front of the camera.
