Trump's differences with other Republicans on foreign policy

Republicans in Congress support many of the same foreign policy issues as their presidential nominee, Donald Trump. This includes Washington's support for Israel. But, as Voice of America correspondent Katherine Gypson reports, lawmakers still have significant differences regarding policies toward China, tariffs and aid to Ukraine, which could make it difficult for former President Trump's second term.

Former President Donald Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month…

"No president has done what I've done for Israel, and we've always had a good relationship," Trump said.

Former President Trump has previously criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu for the security failures he claims enabled the October 7 Hamas attack. During the Trump administration, it was difficult to predict his foreign policy actions. One analyst told VOA that the Republican Party's 2024 foreign policy platform reflects this unpredictability.

"There's not a lot of data, and that gives him the advantage of being able to formulate a policy in the way he sees fit at the moment, rather than being stuck with policies that are set early in a term," he says . Chris Turtle of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Trump's Republican colleagues say the social media app TikTok is controlled by the Chinese government and can be used to obtain information on users and influence their political beliefs.

"I don't want the Chinese Communist Party to get the personal data of our citizens, nor to be able to make propaganda to the American public," said Mitt Romney, a Republican senator.

But Trump no longer agrees with the ban on TikTok.

"We will save TikTok. They want to destroy it. So all users on TikTok, vote for Trump."

The former president has also criticized NATO, claiming that member countries do not pay enough for common defense. His running mate JD Vance has been even more critical of sending US aid to Ukraine.

"Let's not confuse the courage of the Ukrainian troops with the fact that they have the most corrupt leadership and government in Europe and perhaps anywhere in the world ," says Mr. Vance.

This is in direct opposition to the position of the Republican majority leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, who has said that aid to Ukraine is essential for the protection of democracy in Europe.

"It's no longer a guaranteed question that America will respond with force to aggression or even if it will support our allies 100%," Mr. McConnell says.

Analysts say Mr Trump's vows to raise tariffs if he wins the election could cause the biggest conflict with Republican lawmakers.

"This shows the change in the Republican Party since 2016, because Republicans have historically been supporters of free trade ," says Gordon Gray from George Washington University.
