United States President Donald Trump declared that it is "absurd" for the US to continue to bear the main burden of NATO, just days before the alliance summit to be held on July 7 and 8 in Ankara, Turkey.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that Washington's relationship with NATO "is not reciprocal," adding that the allies "were not there for us" during US military operations against Iran.
The US president has repeatedly criticized European allies for their response to the conflict with Iran. According to him, some countries restricted the use of military bases by American forces, which affected US operations.
Trump has also reiterated that Europe must take a greater role in ensuring its security, while Washington has already begun reducing military commitments on the continent.
In his post, Trump also published a chart showing the military spending of NATO member countries. The chart shows that the United States invests significantly more in defense than some of its key European allies, including the United Kingdom and France.
Under pressure from the Trump administration, NATO leaders agreed last year to increase defense and security spending to 5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2035.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that President Trump is disappointed by the fact that NATO allies refused to be involved in operations against Iran.
During a meeting with NATO foreign ministers in May, Rubio said that these disputes are expected to be among the main topics of the July summit in Ankara, calling it "one of the most important summits in NATO's 77-year history."
"The president's views, and frankly his disappointment with some NATO allies for their response to our operations in the Middle East, are well documented. This issue will have to be addressed ," Rubio declared.
