Le Pen's conviction, massive protests expected in France tomorrow

France's National Rally party has called for a mass peaceful protest in Paris on Sunday following the ruling that found far-right politician Marine Le Pen guilty of embezzling European Parliament funds and barred her from the presidential race.

A panel of three judges also decided to sentence Le Pen to four years in prison, two of which were suspended, and two under house arrest. The court fined her 100,000 euros and banned her from running for public office for the next five years.

Le Pen and members of the National Rally party have said the court ruling was politically motivated. A Harris Interactive poll suggests the protest on Sunday will serve as a way to rally support in a country where a third of voters lean towards the National Rally.

" It is in the interest of the National Rally Party to show that they are generally supported by the core of their activists and sympathizers, that they generally remain an important political force and, in one way or another, to show that there is a candidate who is legitimate to be part of the race in the next presidential elections, like Marine Le Pen ," says Jean-Daniel Levy.

Levy said the court's conviction has not diminished Marine Le Pen's popularity.

" Do they think the call for mobilization that will be made on Sunday is justified or not justified? Forty-seven percent of French people think it is justified ," says Daniel Levy.

In Toulon, a port city in southern France, many voters welcomed the court's decision.

" The decision was made by professionals in France and we have to give them credit for that, they gave a sentence, which was appropriate. You can't steal 4 million euros from people ," said Françoise Bennis.
