President Donald Trump is reportedly set to visit Moscow and join Vladimir Putin for the Victory Day parade on May 9.
May 9 parades are held in Russia as a celebration of the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, which Putin has turned into a pillar of his nearly quarter-century rule and a justification for his invasion of Ukraine.
The Republican will fly to Russia for Victory Day celebrations on May 9, according to French news magazine Le Point, citing Russian sources.
This would mark the first visit by an American president since Vlad the Impaler launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Victory Day is a means to showcase to the world the power of the Russian military machine, to commemorate wartime sacrifice, and to rally national pride - all led by a showcase event in Moscow's Red Square.
This year's Victory Day parade is expected to follow the example of last year's subdued celebrations, where Putin vowed that Russia was "always" ready to strike at the West and ignored Britain in a noisy World War II reenactment.
Last year, the Russian dictator gave one of his shortest Victory Day speeches ever, lasting just seven minutes.
Putin also displayed his nuclear briefcase in Red Square, while issuing a chilling warning of a new global war.
Aides dressed in civilian clothes carried the nuclear kit - which could be used to start World War III - as well as protective shields to be used in the event of an assassination attempt against the dictator.
The military parade broadcast on smart TVs was also reportedly targeted by anti-war hackers for at least 20 seconds.
Suddenly, images appeared across Russia showing the reality of the war in Ukraine - fields of dead bodies, destroyed equipment, and many helmets of fallen soldiers.
He also lined up images of Moscow troops in a "Z" formation next to World War II German soldiers forming a Nazi swastika.
This comes after Trump attacked Ukrainian President Zelensky, called for new elections in Ukraine and appeared to suggest that Ukraine started the war with Russia after historic peace talks in Saudi Arabia.
Putin praised the Republican for "changing his position" when he "started to receive objective information" on Wednesday - just hours after Zelensky criticized Trump for living in a "bubble of Russian disinformation."
